Great North Bike Ride
August 2007
55 miles from Seahouses to Tynemouth ridden by 10
Velos with support and picnic delivery by logistics.
Last minute problems with the arrangements for
the bike taxi meant having to alter our transport plans. Six
riders and bikes were deposited at Seahouses to begin the journey South
while the other 4 members of the party took cars and bikes to Tynemouth
and began cycling North to meet them.
The 2 groups of riders met and became one at the North
end of Druridge Bay, the one group of riders met their picnic lunch at
the South end of Druridge Bay, custard available.
The route through Blyth did not seem as tortuous this
year, probably due to a combination of fitness and familiarity,
although a couple of motorists found following cyclists through
Blyth a bit tortuous and made their feelings known with a less than
friendly greeting.
Half of the party needed a refuelling stop at Seaton
Sluice but we were reunited at the finish area where we were pleased to
receive a T-shirt of better quality than in 2006 but less pleased to
find no fermented malt based sports drinks waiting for us this year.
Another very enjoyable day rounded off at Velo HQ
but when are the organisers of the GNBR going to recognise that
complete families like to cycle together and look at providing a
circular route?
